April Book Review: The Practical Peacemaker: How Simple Living Makes Peace Possible by Kate Lawrence

peacemaker_cover_60_pct

An intriguing read, Kate Lawrence’s The Practical Peacemaker: How Simple Living Makes Peace Possible explores the practical ways we can experience and spread peace on this planet. Kate analyzes and summarizes the obstacles to living in peace from the personal and societal levels. Each chapter explains how small changes can make a tremendous difference. She explores the damaging results of personal habits such as careless eating and drinking, packed lifestyles and schedules, instant gratification and anger, for example. Kate also explains the ramifications of some advertising, media saturation, general rudeness and prejudice, environmental degradation and overpopulation and how these things are damaging to a society seeking amity and harmony. In conclusion, the author summarizes how our daily actions do and will contribute to a more compassionate world.

I found Kate’s book an easy and informative read. I recommend The Practical Peacemaker: How Simple Living Makes Peace Possible by Kate Lawrence to anyone who is looking for a way to make thoughtful and compassionate choices every day. I especially recommend this writing to anyone who might find themselves lacking joy or peace, or to those who are searching for how to live a simpler and more fulfilling life.

November Book Review: Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows by Melanie Joy

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” – Adolph HitlerMelanie Joy

In award-winning, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows, Melanie Joy explains why we, as compassionate and loving human beings, make the decision daily to eat and use some animals (cows, pigs, chickens, for example) but care for and not eat others (dogs or cats – at least not in the United States). Coining the term, Carnism, the invisible belief system or ideology that conditions people to eating animals, Melanie Joy exposes the lies we have been told to believe and explains why we think we have free will, when in fact, our freedom of choice has actually been eliminated. She discusses how the primary defense of the system of Carnism is invisibility – we do not see what happens to animals before they hit our plate. Invisibility reflects the defenses avoidance and denial, and is the foundation from which all other mechanisms stand.

After a thorough summary of what occurs behind closed doors to animals worldwide, Dr. Joy brings to light why eating animals is believed to be normal, natural and necessary, and why “free will” (as it relates to animal consumption) is actually a myth. She also highlights the mechanisms of psychic numbing in addition to the aforementioned denial and avoidance: routinization, justification, objectification, de-individualization, dichotomization, rationalization and dissociation. Melanie Joy concludes with how we can move from Carnism to compassion for all living beings.

As an ethical vegan (a person who does not believe in the using, wearing, or eating animals and their byproducts), I thoroughly found this book fascinating! It was easy to read and understand the concepts Dr. Joy presented. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the vegan lifestyle, and especially to those who want to learn about the psychological reasons why we eat and use some of our animal friends and not others or to those concerned about the destruction of our only planet and how Carnism contributes to that.

June Book Review: Will We Survive Climate Change? One Last Chance by Len Frenkel

It is summer in the northern hemisphere, it is warmer than usual in many places worldwide (including where I live), thus I found it appropriate to summarize the book, Will We Survive Climate Change? One Last Chance by Len Frenkel.Len Frenkel

There is a lot of misinformation floating around these days on the internet about climate change or global warming. Because of the confusion, many are quick to deem global warming or climate change a hoax or nonsensical. This decision is nothing less than a very grave mistake. There is an overwhelming amount of documented scientific evidence to support the theory that Earth is warming at a surprisingly alarming rate. If you are wondering why you should care about this situation, then you need to read this book! If we do not change the way we are living worldwide, the results will be nothing less than catastrophic: we, as human beings, will not survive.

Len Frenkel, in his book, Will We Survive Climate Change? One Last Chance, demonstrates why it is imperative that we are not only concerned about climate change, but why we need to take action NOW. Len explains, in very easy to understand terms for the layman, what climate change is, why the earth is warming, what is causing this situation, and what we need to do to stop this environmental disaster. Frenkel discusses how technology, scientific advancements, and factory farming are filling the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and how these gases cause our atmosphere to warm. A warmer earth causes all kinds of worldwide devastation such as (but not limited to): extreme temperature changes, devastating floods, earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes and “abnormal” weather patterns. Having had the pleasure of supporting Len’s work as one of his editors, I will say this book is well documented and supported, and it is written with minimal scientific jargon so anyone can understand it.

I highly recommend Will We Survive Climate Change? One Last Chance to every human being who wants to continue living on planet Earth. This is a MUST READ! This is a quick read for anyone interested in or studying environmental theory. It is the perfect book to give to anyone as a gift. Those who want to understand the basics of climate change, why it is happening and what we can do about it will appreciate this book.

A bit about the author, Len Frenkel:Len Frenkel

Len Frenkel is founder and president of the Lehigh Valley Vegetarian Society in Pennsylvania. He is vegan and very passionate about educating the public about climate change and environmental damage to our one and only planet Earth. Lehigh Valley Vegetarian Society aims to teach the people about serious issues pertaining to environmental sustainability that need to be addressed: health and nutrition, animal brutality in factory farms and in other worldwide practices, and damage to the environment resulting from meat consumption. Len lives in Bethlehem, PA. Will We Survive Climate Change? One Last Chance is his first book.

The author profoundly makes the connection between our culture, our food, and our broad range of problems. He explains and demonstrates the way to a positive transformation in the individual and the collective. If you are seeking a new perspective on how to solve the dilemmas we face as a growing population and changing culture, this book is for you!

I am Thankful…

This is one of my favorite of my blogs. I feel the need to blog this again. Enjoy…

I wrote this last year in 2012, but one year later, today, I feel the need to pass this on again, so here goes …

Thanksgiving is a reflective and special time for me. It will always be because there was a time when I was not so thankful for my life. Years ago, during one Thanksgiving season, I left an abusive relationship. It was one of the most courageous steps I had to take to save myself, my spirit, my sanity. It had to be done, and there was no looking back.

To say that I am now a different person today is an understatement! As the years passed by, I gradually let go of my fear and learned how exciting life is and how beautiful I am as a person.  I am still on a journey, as we all are, but I can say with assurance that…
